Drug Uses
Allegra-D relieves the symptoms linked with seasonal allergic rhinitis such as itchy nose/palate/throat, itchy eyes, nasal congestion, sneezing and rhinitis. It is only for adults and children over the age of 12 years old.
How Taken
Allegra-D comes in the form of a tablet and is usually taken twice a day without food.
Warnings/Precautions
If you have had a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), do not take Allegra-D. Inform your doctor if you suffer from asthma, lung disease, thyroid problems, glaucoma, diabetes, increased pressure in the eye, urinary retention or enlarged prostate, kidney, liver or heart disease, irregular heartbeat or high blood pressure as you may need special monitory or dose adjustments. As it is listed in the FDA pregnancy category C, it is unknown whether it is harmful to an unborn child. It is also unknown whether it passes through breast milk. Consult with your doctor if you are nursing an infant, intend to be pregnant or are pregnant during the treatment.
Missed Dose
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember however if it is nearly time for you next dose, skip the missed one and continue your dosing schedule. Do not take two doses of Allegra-D at once.
Possible Side Effects
Possible side effects include flu-like symptoms, trouble sleeping, headache, nausea, stomach upset. If they continue to persist, report to your doctor promptly. Other side effects that may occur but are highly improbable include dizziness, mood change, fever, fast heartbeat, fainting and drowsiness.
Storage
Store at room temperature away from moisture and sunlight.
Overdose
If taken in large doses, Allegra-D increases the risk of headache, nausea, giddiness, sweating, vomiting, thirst, precordial pain, tachycardia, palpitation, difficulty in micturition, muscular tenseness, restlessness, anxiety, insomnia and restlessness. In more serious cases, a toxic psychosis may occur indicated by delusions and hallucination or it may lead to coma, convulsions, circulatory collapse, cardiac arrhythmias and respiratory failure.
More Information
As Allegra-D may cause dizziness, use caution when driving, operating machinery, performing hazardous activities or participating in activity where you need to be alert. Furthermore, if you are taking an antacid that contains magnesium or aluminum be aware that is may decrease the effects of this drug.
