Uses of Allegra-D

Allegra D is prescribed to sufferers of seasonal allergic rhinitis who are 12 years or older. Symptoms that the drug can alleviate are nasal congestion, rhinitis, sneezing, and itching in the eyes, ears, throat and palate.

The drug is in the form of a tablet and should be taken twice daily with water but not necessarily with food.

Safety Guidelines & Possible Side Effects

Patients who have had a MAOI or monoamine oxidase inhibitor is advised against taking Allegra D. Others should inform their doctors if they have the following ailments or conditions: asthma, glaucoma, lung disease, thyroid problems, enlarged prostate, diabetes, increased eye pressure, urinary retention, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, liver disease, and heart or liver problem. You may need to be given a different dosage. You should also inform your doctor if you are either pregnant or breastfeeding. The effects of Allegra D to the unborn child or to breast milk are yet unknown.

Possible side effects that you may encounter are similar to that of the flu: headache, upset stomach, nausea, insomnia. If they persist, you may call your doctor at once. You may experience other side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, fainting, fever and palpitation. These are possible but very improbable.

Missed Dose

As with most drugs, you can take your missed dose of Allegra D once you remember to. However, skip it if it is almost time for your next dose.

Storage

Store Allegra D at room temperature. Keep away from direct sunlight or moisture.

Overdose

A large overdose of the drug can be dangerous causing most of the possible side effects along with giddiness, sweating, muscle tension, precordial pain, restlessness, tachycardia and anxiety. Serious cases may cause delusions and hallucinations with the worst leading to cardiac arrhythmias, circulatory collapse, coma, convulsions and respiratory failure.

Use caution or completely avoid driving, operating machinery or performing any activity which can either be dangerous or may require you to be alert. Allegra-D can cause dizziness. Antacids with magnesium or aluminium can decrease the drug’s effects.
