Drug Uses

Celexa is prescribed to treat depression and works by balancing chemicals in the brain associated with causing depression. It is in the class of drugs named selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How Taken

Celexa comes in the form of a tablet and is to be taken once a day with or without food. Celexa must be taken exactly as prescribed and must be continued to be taken even if you feel well. As it balances the chemical of the brains, it takes a few weeks before the full effects are evident.

Warnings/Precautions

Do not take Celexa if you have not told your doctor about allergies, liver disease, kidney disease, if you suffer from seizures or mania thoughts and suicidal tendencies. Special monitoring or dose adjustments may be necessary if you suffer any of these conditions. Celexa is in the FDA pregnancy category C and is unknown whether it is harmful to an unborn child. It does pass through breast milk but whether it affects the nursing child is unknown. Discuss with your doctor about the consequences of taking Celexa if you are pregnant, intend to become pregnant or are breast feeding.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. However if it is time for your subsequent dose, skip the missed one and take the scheduled one. Do not double dose.

Possible Side Effects

The side effects of Celexa include increase in sweating, nausea, dry mouth and sleepiness. Male patients may suffer from sexual problems.

Storage

Celexa tablets are to be stored at room temperature in a dry place.

Overdose

An overdose in Celexa, either alone or combined with drugs and/or alcohol, include tremor, somnolence, sinus tachycardia, dizziness, sweating, vomiting and nausea. In severe but rare cases, other symptoms include hyperventilation, cyanosis, rhabdomyolysis, coma, convulsions, amnesia and confusion.

More Information

Caution should be exercised when performing hazardous activities such as driving and operating machinery and whilst consuming alcohol. Celexa may cause drowsiness and dizziness and these activities may increase them.
