Drug Uses
Colchicine is prescribed to treat attacks of gout and acute gouty arthritis. Colchicine is not an analgesic however it suppresses inflammation which helps reduce the overall pain.
How Taken
Colchicine may be taken once every hour, with a 0.6mg – 1.2mg dose, until the pain is relieved. It should be taken with a full glass of water and some food. To prevent further attacks of gout, Colchicine may be taken daily or every 3-4 days on 0.6mg doses. If an acute attack occurs, a 4-8mg is recommended to control it.
Warnings/Precautions
If you are breast feeding, intend to become pregnant or are pregnant, consult with your doctor first as Colchicine may have harmful effects.
Missed Dose
If you forget to take your medication, take it as soon as you remember. However if it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume normal dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at the same time.
Possible Side Effects
Possible side effects that may derive from Colchicine include swelling of the lips, tongue or face, rash, fever, numbness, tingling, breathing difficulty and closing of your throat.
Storage
Colchicine should be stored at room temperature away from heat and moisture and kept away from children.
Overdose
An overdose is rare, however if one occurs, seek medical attention. Symptoms include breathing difficulty, delirium, seizures, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, muscle weakness, stomach pain and burning in your stomach, skin and throat.
