Drug Uses
Effexor XR is a drug used to relieve the symptoms of depression. It corrects the imbalance of serotonin and norepinephrine which are two neurotransmitters that supposedly contribute to the pathophysiology of depression.
How Taken
Effexor XR comes in the form of a capsule and is to be taken orally at least once a day with food or fluid. It should be taken whole and not be crushed, chewed or divided.
Warnings/Precautions
Discuss with your doctor if you are taking any medicines including prescription drugs and herbal supplements before you start taking Effexor XR. If you are taking antidepressants, monitor yourself to see if your condition is getting worse or if you are thinking suicidal thoughts. This is especially vital when you increase or decrease doses and when you first start therapy. It is vital to contact your doctor if you are beginning to feel impulsive, restless, hostile, agitated or irritable. Do not perform hazardous activities or drink alcohol when taking Effexor XR. Pregnant and nursing women should not use Effexor XR or any antidepressants without discussing with your doctor first.
Missed Dose
Double doses are not recommended. Take the missed dose as soon as you remember but if it is nearly time for the next dose, skipped the missed one and only take the next one as directed.
Possible Side Effects
Seek emergency treatment if you experience any of these serious side effects – seizures, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, headaches, blurred vision or an allergic reaction which includes swollen lips, tongue or face, hives, difficulty breathing and closing of the throat. Other less serious side effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, appetite loss, drowsiness, dizziness, mild tremor, agitation, insomnia, and sweating, yawning and sexual problems.
Storage
Effexor XR should be stored at room temperature, away from children.
Overdose
Symptoms of an overdose include numbness, nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, irregular heartbeats, seizures and unconsciousness.

Effexor XR could possibly may you drowsy or dizzy so use caution when performing hazardous activities such as driving or operating machinery. Be aware when consuming alcohol as it may increase confusion, drowsiness and dizziness. Do not stop taking the drug without consulting your doctor as you may need to gradually reduce the doses before stopping entirely. If you suddenly stop the medication, side effects may occur.
