Drug Uses
Migraine headaches can be treated with the use of Imitrex.
How Drug Works
Imitrex is effective in easing migraine headaches by working specifically on the nerves and blood vessels that create tension.
How Taken
When you have a migraine, take one dose of Imitrex or if the symptoms are severe, take two doses. Unless directed by your health care provider, do not take more than 200mg of Imitrex daily.
Possible Side Effects
Possible side effects include nausea, drowsiness, dizziness and fatigue.
Warnings/Precautions
Talk to your doctor before taking Imitrex and inform him or her about any medication you are taking and your entire medical history. This includes if you have an allergy to Imitrex or if you suffer from strokes, heart disease, Raynaud syndrome, uncontrolled blood pressure, peripheral vascular disease, transient ischemic attacks, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol or if you smoke.
Overdose
If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency help.
Drug Interactions
Tell your doctor if you have taken any MAO inhibitors, headache medication or ergotamine so he or she can determine the effects of combining the drugs.
Missed Dose
This drug does not have a dose schedule as it is only taken when a migraine surfaces therefore it is unlikely you will miss a dose.
Storage
Imitrex is to be kept in an air tight container at room temperature away from heat, moisture and out of reach of children.
