Lexapro improves the value of lives for adults who suffer from depression and generalized anxiety disorder. Lexapro is effective as it balances neurotransmitters in the brain and increases the amount of serotonin to restore your mood. Lexapro is a member of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, otherwise known as SSRIs, which is a class of drugs.
How Taken
Lexapro is formulated in an oral tablet or liquid and is usually taken once daily with or without food. It can be taken in conjunction with most medication but have a prior discussion with your health care provider before taking Lexapro. The recommended dose for patients suffering from depression is 10mg per day whilst those suffering Generalized Anxiety Disorder are recommended 10 – 20 mg daily. The full benefits of this medication will be evident after prolonged use at regular basis.
Warnings/Precautions
If you have liver disease, kidney disease or suffer from mania, suicidal thoughts or seizures, inform your doctor who may alter your doses or have you observed throughout Lexapro treatment. Do not take Lexapro in combination with citalopram (Celexa) as it may impose risks on your health. As Lexapro is listed in the FDA category C, it is unknown whether it will be harmful to an unborn child. This drug passes through breast milk and may affect your nursing baby. Consult with your doctor if you are breast feeding or pregnant before taking Lexapro.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and proceed with the following dose.
Possible Side Effects
Adverse side effects may include decreased libido, ejaculation disorder, fatigue, insomnia, nausea, irregular heartbeat, chills, fever, high or low blood pressure, headache, nervousness, anxiety, tremor, appetite changes, diarrhea or an allergic reaction. Contact your doctor if symptoms persist or continue to be bothersome.
Storage
Keep Lexapro away from heat and moisture at room temperature.
Overdose
Signs of a Lexapro overdose may be indicated by sweating, fast heartbeat, nausea, tremor, vomiting, drowsiness or dizziness. Seek emergency help.
