Uses of Naprosyn

Naprosyn is a prescription medicine used to treat acute gout, ankylosing spondylitis (chronic inflammation of the spine and sacroiliac joints), bursitis (inflammation of the bursa), juvenile arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, primary dysmenorrhea (period pain) and tendonitis.

Naprosyn comes in the form of a liquid or an extended release tablet. Your dosage and intervals will depend on the form of medication and on your medical condition. For example, if you suffer from arthritis, take your recommended dosage twice a day. Those who have gout can take Naprosyn every eight hours. If you are taking the medication for pain, every 6 to 8 hours should suffice.

Safety Guidelines & Possible Side Effects

During your consultation, tell your doctor about your full medical history, especially if you have allergies to aspirin, bleeding disorder, congestive heart failure, fluid retention, heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, liver disease and stomach ulcers. Mention to your doctor if you are breastfeeding, pregnant or planning to get pregnant, or if you are drinking more than three alcoholic beverages daily. Naprosyn is not expected to cause harm to your unborn baby but it is still wise to seek medical advice before proceeding.

Though uncommon, side effects are still possible. Serious side effects may include abdominal cramping, allergic reaction, black stools, blood in vomit, fluid retention, hearing problems, heartburn, indigestion, mouth ulcers, muscle cramps, numbing and tingling. Other side effects include constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, irregular period, nausea and temporary depression.

Missed Dose

Naprosyn can be taken as prescribed or as needed. If you have a schedule, take the dose you have missed as soon as you remember it. Skip the dose, however, if the next scheduled dose is nearly due.

Storage

Store Naprosyn in an air tight container at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.

Overdose

If you or someone else overdoses on Naprosyn, the symptoms are drowsiness, indigestion, nausea, palpitations and seizures. Seek emergency medical attention at once.

More Information

As much as possible, avoid drinking alcohol during Naprosyn treatment. The combination can cause extreme dizziness, which can make some activities doubly dangerous. The combination can also raise the risk of stomach bleeding. Naprosyn also increases the skin’s sensitivity to light.
