Drug Uses
Nexium comes in the form of a long-acting capsule that is prescribed to treat conditions that produce excessive stomach acid such as gastroesophageal reflux disease otherwise known as GERD. Nexium works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach.
How Taken
Normally Nexium is taken an hour before a meal, once a day at the same time every day. Do not chew, split or crush them.
Warnings/Precautions
Before you take this medication, tell your doctor if you suffer from liver disease, taking antibacterial agents, undergoing penicillin therapy or are pregnant. Depending on what your doctor determines, you may not be able to take Nexium or will need to be observed throughout treatment.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Do not take two doses of Nexium at once. If it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and resume your normal dosing schedule.
Possible Side Effects
Unlikely but more common side effects derived from the use of Nexium include diarrhea, cough, headache or constipation. Unlikely but more serious side effects include chest pain, throat pain, stomach pain, vomiting or an allergic reaction. Seek emergency attention.
Storage
Store Nexium in an air tight container at room temperature.
Overdose
Significant over dosage of Nexium may be characterized by drowsiness, shortness of breathe, loss of coordination, tremor and even seizures.
