Uses of Paxil

Paxil is an antidepressant drug that belongs to a group known as serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These drugs basically increase the levels of serotonin and correct under chemical imbalances in the brain to treat depression and anxiety disorders.

As a tablet, Paxil CR is taken orally usually once daily. It can be taken with or without food. Make sure you follow your doctor’s exact prescription. Do not discontinue even if you feel like you are getting better. It takes several weeks for the drug to actually take effect. If you do need to stop taking the drug, your doctor will advise you to reduce your dosage gradually.

Safety Guidelines & Possible Side Effects

During consultation, reveal any of the following diseases or conditions: liver or kidney disease, seizures or epilepsy, suicide ideation and manic disorder. You may not be given Paxil as it may aggravate your condition. If ever you are still given Paxil CR, it may be at a lower dosage or with special monitoring. Also inform your doctor of an existing pregnancy, plans to get pregnant or plans to breastfeed. The effects of the drug to the unborn or breastfeeding baby are still undetermined.

There are many side effects that have been associated to taking Paxil CR. Some have reported allergic reactions, irregular heartbeat, low or high blood pressure, flu-like symptoms, unusual bleeding or bruising and sexual problems. If you think your side effects are serious, immediately stop taking the drug and report the situation to your doctor. If the side effects are mild, you may continue taking the drug but still inform your doctor about your symptoms. Other side effects include headache, anxiety, dry mouth, diarrhea, loss of appetite and insomnia.

Missed Dose

Take your missed dose only if there is still enough time between it and the next scheduled dose. If not, just skip that missed dose and wait to take the next dose. It is important not to double dose.

Storage

Store Paxil CR at a temperature between 20-25°C (68-77°F).

Overdose

If you suspect overdose, immediately seek medical help whether or not you are experiencing symptoms. Symptoms include seizures, drowsiness, vomiting, nausea, hyperactivity, agitation and dilated pupils.

Do not drive or perform other activities that can potentially be hazardous. Paxil CR, especially when mixed with alcohol, can cause dizziness and drowsiness.
