Uses of Xenical

Xenical is formulated to help obese people lose weight and maintain weight loss. It works in the intenstines, blocking some of the fat ingested so that they won’t be absorbed by the body. The undigested fat exits the body through bowel movements. You should use Xenical with a low calorie diet.

Xenical comes in the form of a capsule. Take it by mouth three times a day, with food as directed by your doctor. Take the capsule with a daily diet consisting of total calories, of which 30% is of fat.

Safety Guidelines & Possible Side Effects

Talk to your doctor before taking Xenical, especially if you have chronic malabsorption syndrome. Your doctor may discourage you from taking the drug if you have the condition. You may either be discourage to take Xenical or advised dosage adjustment with monitoring if you have anorexia, bulimia, diabetes, a history of kidney stones, been taking cyclosporine or are taking other weight loss medication. Xenical will most likely not harm your unborn child but it is known whether the drug passes through breast milk. So, inform your doctor if you are planning to breastfeed or are breastfeeding.

Immediately discontinue Xenical if you experience an allergic reaction. You may also experience less serious side effects such as gas with discharge, oily stools, increased frequency of bowel movements, oily spotting, urgency to go to the bathroom, orange or brown oil in stool and even an inability to control bowel movements. The side effects mentioned are normal, showing that the drug is working. They usually occur early in the treatment or if you have ingested a high fat meal. These symptoms are temporary.

Missed Dose

Extra doses will not help and are discouraged. Skip the missed dose and wait for the next meal to take Xenical.

Drug Storage

Keep Xenical capsules in a tightly closed container, away from heat and moisture, at room temperature. Keep away from the reach of children. Discard expired medication.

Overdose

While the symptoms of Xenical overdose are not known, immediately call poison control or emergency medical services if an overdose is suspected.

Other Information

Take Xenical with a multivitamin that contains vitamins D, E, K, and beta-carotene. Take the multivitamin once daily, at least two hours from taking Xenical. This is because Xenical decreases the body’s ability to absorb some fat-soluble vitamins.
