Uses of Zoloft

Zoloft is a prescription drug used to treat depression among other conditions, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder and posttraumatic disorder in adults. It can be used to treat obsessive compulsive disorder in children and teenagers, ages 6 to 17.

Zoloft is a tablet so it must be taken orally. It is usually taken once a day, with water but with or without food. Your doctor may prescribe otherwise. Follow his instructions carefully. As with other antidepressants, Zoloft must not be discontinued suddenly even if you are feeling much better. The dosage must be reduced little by little, as directed by your doctor.

Safety Guidelines & Possible Side Effects

Your doctor must be aware if you have a liver or kidney disease, are experiencing seizures, have a manic disorder or are suffering from suicidal ideation. These conditions may make your doctor not prescribe Zoloft to you or may do so with some dosage adjustment and regular observation and monitoring. The effects of the drug on the unborn and the nursing child are not yet known so better talk to your doctor about being pregnant, planning to get pregnant and planning to breastfeed before taking Zoloft.

If you experience serious side effects, such as an allergic reaction, irregular heartbeat, low or high blood pressure and flu-like symptoms, immediately stop taking Zoloft and seek emergency medical attention. If the symptoms are less serious, such as anxiety, nausea, cottony mouth, appetite changes, tremor, sexual problems, insomnia, sleepiness and diarrhea, keep on taking the drug but inform your doctor about the symptoms. Talk to your doctor about any other symptoms that are bothering you.

Missed Dose

Skip your missed dose if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. It is dangerous to double dose.

Drug Storage

Store Zoloft at 15° - 30°C (59° - 86°F), preferably at 25°C (77°F).

Overdose

Immediately seek medical help if you experience signs of overdose, such as agitation, nausea, vomiting, seizures, dilated pupils, drowsiness, hyperactivity and tremor.

Other Information

Zoloft can cause dizziness and drowsiness. So, you should be cautious when performing activities that can be potentially dangerous. Alcohol can aggravate the feelings of dizziness and drowsiness.
